Quilts were traditionally handcrafted out of necessity to ward off the
cold winter nights. Women used scraps of fabric leftover from other
projects as well as old worn-out clothes to create objects of beauty
and warmth. Even when a pattern was followed, each quilt was unique
and special based on the fabric used. Today mass-produced quilts are
readily available to purchase but they all look the same and lack personality,
history, and life.
My modern American quilts are handmade from the scraps of contemporary
society- the plastic bags that accompany most purchases and include
warnings that these bags are not safe for small children. Crafted using
traditional patterns and techniques, the quilts are beautiful yet uncomfortable,
visually alluring yet physically unwelcoming.
